Instagram story reply and mention automation: setup, triggers and the hard limits

Two things on Instagram stories can trigger an automatic DM: somebody replying to your story, and somebody mentioning your account in theirs. Both arrive as direct messages rather than comments, so the answer is an ordinary DM and not the private reply that comment-to-DM uses, and a story campaign therefore sends one message with no follow gate, no email step and no follow-up. Both need Starter or above. Neither works on the Free plan.
Story automation is a different mechanism from comment-to-DM, not a second location for the same feature. The trigger, the send, the plan requirement and the list of usable settings are all different.
The two story triggers, and what each one hears
A story reply is what happens when somebody watching your story types into the box at the bottom. Instagram delivers it to the account as a direct message that carries a reference to the story being replied to, which is how an automation can tell a story reply apart from an ordinary DM and know which story it belongs to.
A story mention is the other direction. Somebody posts their own story, tags your handle in it, and Instagram sends your account a message with a story-mention attachment. There is no text to read, which is why a mention trigger needs no keyword: every mention counts as a match.
| Story reply | Story mention | Comment on a post or reel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What starts it | They reply to your story | They tag you in their story | They comment on your post |
| How the reply is sent | An ordinary direct message | An ordinary direct message | A private reply to the comment |
| Keyword needed | Optional | No, every mention matches | Optional |
| Public reply under it | Not possible | Not possible | Yes, with up to ten variations |
| How long the trigger lasts | As long as the story is up (24 hours) | No window, mentions can come any time | The post stays, so indefinitely |
| Plan | Starter and above | Starter and above | Every plan, including Free |
A story reply is not a private reply
This is the distinction that most explainers skip, and it changes what you should expect. Comment-to-DM uses Instagram's private reply, an endpoint that answers a specific comment. Meta documents 750 private replies per hour per professional account for that call, and accepts one up to seven days after the comment was posted, with exactly one reply allowed per comment.
A story reply goes through none of that. It is a message, so it is answered with a message on the normal messaging path. The hourly private-reply counter does not apply to it, there is no seven day window to lean on, and there is no one-per-comment rule stopping a second automation from answering.
Story replies are also answered as they arrive rather than paced into a queue. Comment-to-DM queues because Meta publishes a cap for the call it makes; the messaging path has no published number of the same kind, so there is nothing honest to quote you.
A story campaign sends one message, and only one
This is enforced, not a convention. When a campaign's trigger is a story reply or a story mention, the opening greeting, the follow gate, the email capture step and the delayed follow-up are all stripped when the campaign is saved, and they are forced off again at delivery time so a campaign built on an older version behaves the same way. The builder hides those toggles entirely on the Story tab.
| Feature | On a story campaign | On a comment campaign |
|---|---|---|
| Main DM with tracked link buttons | Yes | Yes |
| Keyword matching | Yes, or match any reply | Yes, or match any comment |
| Opening greeting | No | Yes, every plan |
| Follow gate | No | Yes, Starter and above |
| Email capture in the DM | No | Yes, Starter and above |
| Delayed follow-up | No | Yes, Starter and above |
| Public reply under the trigger | No, there is nothing public to reply to | Yes, on posts and on ads |
If that feels restrictive, it reflects what a story reply is. Somebody typed one word into a story box while swiping through forty other stories. A four-step sequence with a follow gate is a lot to put in front of that.
Setting up a story reply campaign
The steps follow the same builder as a post campaign, with the Story tab selected instead of Post / Reel. On the Free plan the tab shows a lock and will not open.
- Open a new campaign and pick Story as the trigger channel.
- Choose the story target. Specific Active 24h Story lists the stories currently live on the account, with their thumbnails. Any Active Instagram Story answers replies to whatever you happen to have up, now and in future.
- Decide what counts as a reply. Leave the keyword rule on to answer only replies containing your word, or tick the option that triggers on any reply and on the emoji quick reactions, which is what most people actually tap.
- Write the main DM and add a tracked link button if the reply is meant to deliver something.
- Go Live, then reply to your own story from a second account to confirm the DM arrives and the log row says Sent.
The emoji option matters more than it looks. Story boxes get a fire emoji far more often than they get a typed word, and an emoji-only reply cleans down to an empty string before keyword matching, so a keyword campaign will never answer one. Ticking any-reply is the only way to catch them.
The 24 hour problem, and how it is handled
A story disappears after 24 hours, and so does any reason for a campaign pointed at that one story to keep running. When you pick a specific story, the campaign is stamped with an expiry 24 hours after that story was posted. A scheduled sweep switches the campaign off once the expiry passes, and the delivery worker refuses to fire it as well, in case a late webhook arrives between the expiry and the sweep.
Nothing is deleted. The campaign sits paused with all its copy intact, so you can point it at a new story and switch it back on, which is how a daily story with the same call to action is run without rebuilding anything. The campaign list shows how much time a specific-story campaign has left rather than letting it look permanent.
An Any Active Instagram Story campaign carries no expiry and is never paused by that sweep. It is the right choice for a standing offer, and the wrong choice when the DM refers to one particular story, because it will happily answer a reply to tomorrow's unrelated story with yesterday's link.
The plan requirement, stated plainly
Comment-to-DM works on every plan, the free one included. Story automation does not. It is switched on from Starter upwards, which is the paid tier immediately above Free, and the 15 day trial has it along with everything else.
| Plan | Price per month | Story replies and mentions | DMs per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | ₹0$0 | Not included | 1,000 |
| Free Trial, 15 days | ₹0$0 | Included | 50,000 across the trial |
| Starter | ₹99$3.50 | Included | 7,000 |
| Pro | ₹249$9 | Included | 20,000 |
| Business | ₹499$17 | Included | 50,000 |
The downgrade behaviour is worth knowing before the trial ends. A story campaign built on the trial is not deleted when the workspace lands on Free. It is blocked at delivery with a message naming the plan, so it stops answering and the log tells you why rather than going quiet.
Story DMs also draw on the same monthly DM allowance as comment DMs. There is no separate story budget. When the allowance runs out, a story reply is logged as skipped with the limit in the message.
What story automation cannot do
The honest list, because most pages on this topic imply more than the API allows.
- It cannot post stories for you. Nothing here publishes content, and no Instagram permission used for messaging would allow it.
- It cannot watch, react to or reply to other people's stories on your behalf. A tool offering that is not doing it through the messaging API.
- It cannot answer a story reply from your own account. Messages the connected account sent to itself are ignored, so testing needs a second account.
- It cannot answer a story mention with an AI answer from your documents, because a mention arrives with no text for the AI to read.
- Story mention campaigns have no tab of their own in the campaign builder today. The trigger is supported by the API and by the delivery worker, and the Story tab creates a story reply campaign.
When story automation is worth setting up
Stories suit a one-message answer, which happens to be all a story campaign can send. A link to a product somebody asked about, a discount code, a booking page, the thing you mentioned out loud in the story. Anything that needs a sequence belongs on a post or reel campaign, where the greeting, the follow gate and the follow-up are available.
The practical case for it is volume. A creator posting daily stories gets replies all day from people already watching, which is a warmer audience than a comment section, and answering every one by hand is what stops most people from asking for replies at all.
Questions people ask about this
- Can Instagram story replies be automated?
- Yes, on a paid plan. A reply to your story arrives as a direct message carrying a reference to that story, and an automation can answer it with a DM of your own, either on a keyword or on any reply including emoji reactions. Story replies and story mentions are available from the Starter plan upwards and are not part of the Free plan, unlike comment-to-DM, which is on every plan.
- Is a story reply automation the same as comment-to-DM?
- No. Comment-to-DM uses Instagram's private reply, which answers a specific comment, is capped at 750 an hour per professional account and is allowed once per comment. A story reply is an ordinary direct message, so it is answered on the normal messaging path with none of those rules. That also means two story campaigns matching the same reply will both send.
- Can I auto-DM someone who mentions me in their story?
- Yes. A story mention reaches the account as a message with a story-mention attachment, and a mention trigger needs no keyword because there is no text to match: every mention qualifies. It needs Starter or above, the same as story replies. Because the mention carries no text, an AI answer from your uploaded documents cannot be used for it.
- What happens to my story automation when the story expires?
- A campaign pointed at one specific story is stamped with an expiry 24 hours after that story was posted. A scheduled sweep pauses it once the expiry passes, and the delivery worker will not fire it either if a late reply arrives first. Nothing is deleted, so you can point the same campaign at a new story and switch it back on. Any-story campaigns carry no expiry at all.
- Do story reply DMs count against my monthly DM limit?
- Yes, they draw on the same monthly allowance as comment DMs, and there is no separate story budget. Once the allowance for the billing period is used, a story reply is recorded in the delivery log as skipped with the limit in the message rather than failing silently. The Starter plan carries 7,000 DMs a month, and the higher plans carry more.
